The British government will provide $160 million to help soccer clubs improve safety and comfort in the wake of last year’s Hillsborough stadium disaster.

The funding will be granted over a five-year period to help meet recommendations of an independent inquiry into last April’s disaster in which 95 fans died.

The money will come from the tax paid by Britain’s pools companies on the bets they receive.
