COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Aversa Helps SCC Maintain Lead in Ninth to Win, 4-3

Joe Aversa came in to get a game-ending strikeout and Southern California College defeated Westmont, 4-3, in a Golden State Athletic Conference baseball game Tuesday at SCC.
SCC led, 4-1, behind starter Larry Jacinto (2-2) when the ninth inning started. But Westmont cut the lead to 4-3, and had the bases loaded when Aversa got the final out for his second save.
Denny Bernie had four hits, including two doubles and two RBIs for SCC (13-10, 6-2). Sean Maharg and Brett Howard each had solo home runs for SCC.
In a nonconference baseball game:
The Master’s 18, Chapman 9--James Merriweather had four hits and four RBIs, and Curt Ledesma had three RBIs for visiting Chapman (13-12). Ledesma had two-run home run in the eighth. The Master’s had 15 hits.
In the UC Irvine men’s tennis tournament:
Princeton 9, Chapman 0--Greg Hartch defeated Mike Zuechar, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles for Princeton in the preliminary round of the tournament.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:
Chapman 3-1, Cal State Dominguez Hills 1-0--Sandy Olivas had two hits and scored a run in the first game. Christy Wurster had two doubles and an RBI in the second game for Chapman (24-10, 3-5).
In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:
Azusa Pacific 5-2, Southern California College 4-3--Azusa Pacific scored three runs in the sixth inning of the first game at SCC. Christie George and Stephanie Wills each had a double and an RBI for the Vanguards (10-14, 1-1) in their second-game victory.
In nonconference softball:
Cal Lutheran 6-4, Christ College Irvine 0-6--Christ College Irvine scored six runs in the sixth inning of the second game to earn a split at Cal Lutheran. DeeAndra Pilkington shut out Christ College on three hits and Kim White had a triple and a home run in the first game for Cal Lutheran (12-6-2). Christ College is 15-10.
