COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Vasquez Collects 7 RBIs in Canyons’ 11-Run 6th

Chris Vasquez drove in a week’s worth of runs in one inning with a grand slam and a three-run home run during Canyons’ 11-run, sixth-inning outburst in a 17-3 win at Bakersfield on Thursday afternoon.

Fourteen Canyons players batted in the big inning, and Canyons had a season-high 21 hits in the game. The victory moved Canyons into a three-way tie for first place in the Western State Conference with Moorpark and Cuesta. All have 7-2 records.

Canyons’ hitting stars included Mike Kerber, four for five with two doubles, a three-run home run and four runs batted in; Gary Morgan, four for five with three runs, and Ron Robart, three hits.

Starter Lance Gibson (3-1) earned the victory for Canyons (15-7).

In other baseball games:

Harbor 6, Mission 3--For the second time this week, Mission jumped to a 3-0 lead against Harbor, the No. 1 team in the state, but ended up losing a Southern California Athletic Conference game.

Visiting Mission (13-8-1, 5-3) led, 3-0, after two innings, but Harbor (24-6, 7-0) tied the score with a two-run home run in the fourth and pulled away with two runs in the sixth and another in the eighth.

Freshman Nino Romo (5-3) went the distance for Mission. He struck out five, allowed nine hits and walked three. Richard Ortiz and Bruce Gomez combined for five of Mission’s six hits.

Santa Barbara 12, Pierce 10--Pierce banged out 19 hits in a Western State Conference game at Santa Barbara but gave up eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Pierce’s Pat Fairly hit a two-run home run in the eighth and finished three for four with two runs scored and two RBIs. Vince Simili and Damon Lantz each had three hits and scored two runs for Pierce (9-13, 2-7).

Starter Kurt Lowry dropped to 5-4 with the loss.

Ventura 3, Cuesta 1--Ross Gotwals punched a solo home run and Lupe Carrillo stroked a two-run single for host Ventura in a Western State Conference game.

Right-hander Mike Teron (5-2) went the distance for Ventura (12-8, 4-5) and struck out seven.

TENNIS

Bakersfield 5, Ventura 4--Shane Duffy at No. 4 and Eric Tucker at No. 6 were the only singles victors for host Ventura (2-12, 1-9) in a WSC match.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 1, Toledo 0--Debbie Dickmann pitched four innings in relief to lead the Lady Matadors in the pool-play round of the Pony tournament at Fullerton.

Lisa Erickson belted a run-scoring double for Northridge (16-12).

In an earlier game, Northridge defeated Arizona, 1-0.
