SOUTH COAST LEAGUE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley, Mission Viejo Play to 5-5 Tie

After 13 years of coaching at Capistrano Valley High School, Bob Zamora knows how it feels to win and lose.

And after three hours and 11 innings of baseball Friday, Zamora also knows what it’s like to do neither.

Capistrano Valley and visiting Mission Viejo played to a 5-5 tie in a South Coast League game that was called for darkness. It was the second tie of the season for Mission Viejo, but the first of Zamora’s career.

“It’s kind of an ugly feeling,” Zamora said. “It’s better than a loss, I guess, but it’s not as good as a win. It was an exciting ball game, at least.”

Capistrano Valley (4-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 in league play) rallied twice to tie the score, and starting pitcher Chris Lugo didn’t allow a walk in 10 innings, but the Cougars couldn’t come up with enough for the victory.

Mission Viejo took a 3-2 lead in the third inning on Don Disbro’s first home run of the season--a solo shot to left field.

But Capistrano Valley tied the score in the seventh, when shortstop John Mackay lined a single to right off Mission Viejo reliever Bill Collins to drive in Mike Lavin from second.

Mission Viejo (3-2-2, 1-0-1) took a 5-3 lead in the 10th on Mark Newman’s sacrifice fly and a two-out RBI single by Tim Snowden.

In the bottom of the inning, Mission Viejo center fielder Ricky Marian made a diving, backhanded catch in the right field alley to rob Rick Guillen of a hit.

But after Dan Zamora, the coach’s son, singled to load the bases, Jonathan Petke lined a two-out, two-run single to center to tie the score.

Dana Hills 6, El Toro 4--Visiting Dana Hills (5-4, 1-1) was led by Mike Robertson, who had two hits and three RBIs. Jon Spalding pitched 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief for the victory.
