COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Edges Riverside in Softball

Tara Snyder’s sacrifice fly gave Golden West College a 1-0 victory over Riverside in eight innings in an Orange Empire Conference softball game Friday at Riverside.

Cheri Williams started the inning with a double to center for Golden West (22-10, 4-3). She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lisa Kaufman.

Kaufman (13-5) also was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits in eight innings. She had 13 strikeouts. Riverside is 4-17, 0-7.

In other Orange Empire Conference softball games:

Orange Coast 3, Rancho Santiago 0--Nancy Johnson had two hits, Kellie Newcombe had a double and scored two runs and Cathy Scanlan had an RBI double and scored a run for host Orange Coast (20-5, 6-1). Niqua Monson (5-2) pitched a three-hitter for OCC. Rancho Santiago is 5-15, 2-5.

Fullerton 5, Saddleback 3--Linda Ford had a hit and an RBI for host Fullerton (3-19, 2-5). Danielle Heere had two hits and an RBI for Saddleback (12-13, 4-3).

In nonconference softball:

Cypress 3, Antelope Valley 0--Laura Corson (12-1) pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts for host Cypress (22-3). Rose Ferrante had two hits, and Tricia Barr and Collene Conahan each had an RBI single for Cypress. Antelope Valley is 7-11.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s track and field:

Saddleback 83, Rancho Santiago 52--Eric Steele won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.5 seconds and tied for the 400 hurdles with Tracy Pesavento at 59.2 for host Saddleback.

Billy Gottron won the javelin at 161 feet 7 inches, and Mike Allison won the 100 (10.6) and the 200 (22.2) for Saddleback. Roger Nava won the 5,000 in 16:06 for Rancho Santiago.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s track and field:

Saddleback 103, Rancho Santiago 14--Heather Fenner won the 100 (12.6), 200 (26.0) and long jump (17-7 1/2) and anchored the 400 relay team for Saddleback.

In South Coast Conference men’s volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Grossmont 0--Al Vistaunet had 22 kills for host Orange Coast (12-1) in a 15-6, 15-13, 15-9 sweep.

Golden West 3, Westmont 1--Eric Zeno had 21 kills for host Golden West (8-5) as the Rustlers won, 15-10, 15-10, 11-15, 15-13.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Saddleback 9, Grossmont 0--Esteban Saba won, 6-4, 6-3, and Arlen Sternberg won, 6-1, 7-5, for Saddleback (16-0).
