COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Wins in Ninth on Giuseffi’s Home Run

Mike Giuseffi’s home run with one out in the ninth inning gave Chapman College a 2-1 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball game Tuesday at Hart Park in Orange.

San Luis Obispo scored in the sixth to take a 1-0 lead. Chapman came back in the eighth. Jody Garcia started the rally with a one-out double. He went to third on a single by Mike Kelly. One out later, he scored on a single by Rod Klopfer.

Peter Coleman (5-3) allowed six hits in nine innings for Chapman (17-12, 8-5). Dennis Reed (1-2) took the loss for San Luis Obispo (14-7, 6-5).

In another nonconference baseball game:

Cal State Fullerton 9, University of San Diego 4--Phil Nevin hit a two-run home run to give Fullerton a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning. Frank Charles added a solo home run for Fullerton in the sixth. Nevin, who has three home runs in the last three games, leads the team with six home runs.

Charles also had a two-run triple in the fourth to cut San Diego’s lead to 3-2. Bill Fitzgerald (2-0) didn’t allow a run in the fourth or fifth to get the victory.

Rich Gonzales had a seventh-inning double and has reached base safely in all 27 games for Fullerton (15-12). Pat Fitzsimons (2-5) took the loss for San Diego (14-18).

In a Golden State Athletic Conference softball doubleheader:

Cal Baptist 3-2, Southern California College 1-3--Crystal Carson had an RBI triple and later scored on a passed ball as SCC scored three runs in the fifth inning of the second game. SCC is 12-14, 2-4.

In a nonconference softball doubleheader:

Chapman 1-5, Toledo 0-4 (second game, 8 innings)--Kristina Webb had a two-run double in the eighth inning of the second game for host Chapman (28-10). Jackie Blake (13-2) got the victories in both games.

Trina Honea had an RBI single in the second inning of the first game for Chapman’s only run.
