A man stepped from an alley in the Crenshaw District and opened fire with a rifle, killing a woman pedestrian in the street and wounding two brothers on a sidewalk before disappearing into the night, police said Wednesday.
“We don’t know who he is . . . and we have no idea what his motive was,” Detective Glen Tapley said, noting the victims and gunman had no known connection. “It’s a real whodunit.”
Salina Wright, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene. Humberto Contreras, 34, and Luis Contreras, 36, were treated at Brotman Medical Center and released. They live near the shooting scene at Pinafore Street and Nicolet Avenue.
Tapley said the brothers were walking down the street about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when the gunman stepped up and asked casually, “What’s up, amigos ?”
He opened fire on the brothers and then before fleeing he turned and fired at Wright, who was walking across the street, police said.
