COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chavez, Kukawksi Lead Mission to 12-4 Win

Robert Chavez and John Kukawski blasted back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning Thursday at East L. A. College as Mission College rolled to a 12-4 victory in a Southern California Athletic Conference baseball game.

Chavez, who also doubled, and Kukawski (three for five) each drove in three runs.

The home runs were the second of the season for both players.

Mission (16-8-1, 8-3 in conference play) had 17 hits. Right-hander Nino Romo (6-3) scattered seven hits and struck out seven to earn the win.

In another baseball game:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 8, The Master’s 5--Robert Campbell, formerly of Pierce College and Chatsworth High, had a double, a single, stole two bases and scored twice to pace host Dominguez Hills’ nonconference win.

Craig Johnson of The Master’s pounded a two-out, two-run triple in the sixth to forge a 5-5 tie. Sheldon Sparks had two hits for the Mustangs (14-14).

Dominguez Hills, ranked 21st in Division II, improved to 11-13-2.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pierce 8, West L. A. 1--Jason Gary, Vince Brandt and Eric Schaeffer scored impressive singles victories as the Brahmas routed West L. A. in a Western State Conference match at home.

Gary defeated Leonard Johns, 6-1, 6-0; Brandt downed Paul Salvator, 6-4, 6-1; and Eric Schaeffer topped Roger Tawill, 6-1, 6-1.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 5-3, Loyola Marymount 1-2--Kim White drove in catcher Joy Fuller in the 10th inning of the second game to lift Cal Lutheran to a nonconference sweep at Loyola Marymount.

White, a junior third baseman, scored in the fifth on a groundout to tie the score, 2-2. DeeAndra Pilkington (10-5) went the distance and struck out seven.

In the first game, Leslie Stevens drove in two runs, and Alysa Mathews and Pilkington each had one RBI for Cal Lutheran (18-9-2).

Margie Sievers (2-0), a freshman right-hander from Big Bear, struck out eight for the Regals in the opener.
