Brayton Deals Birch First Loss

Aby Brayton of the University of San Diego women’s tennis team defeated Stanford’s Sandra Birch Thursday. It was the defending NCAA singles champion’s first loss in nine matches this season. Brayton defeated Birch, 6-4, 6-3, but the No. 17 Toreras (9-8) dropped the nonconference match, 7-2, at USD to No. 1 Stanford (17-0).

Top-ranked UC San Diego defeated visiting Gustavus Adolphus of Minnesota, 8-1, in a nonconference match at UCSD.

The Triton’s No. 1 Christine Behrens defeated Amy McCrea, 7-6, 6-1 and UCSD’s No. 2 Robyn Inaba defeated Mary Sutherland, 6-2, 6-3. UCSD improved to 9-4.

MEN’S TENNIS

Jose Luis Noriega defeated Keith Evans, 7-5, 7-5, and then teamed with J.R. Edwards to defeat Mike Knowles and Kevin Bradley, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 as USD defeated Mississippi, 6-3, at the Blue-Gray Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.

USD (17-3) will play fourth-seeded Alabama today.

Sig Huber and Francois Monnar won their singles matches and UC San Diego, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III, had an easy time against Division I Hawaii, winning 6-0.

Huber defeated Peter Sohn, 6-2, 6-4 and Monnar won over Mark Williams, 6-0, 6-2 for UCSD (9-7). Hawaii is 19-14.

Seventh-ranked Harvard defeated U.S. International, 6-3, but two Gulls’ players turned in upsets.

At No. 1 singles, USIU’s Yoram Baron, (No. 84 in the Nation) defeated 16th-ranked Michael Zimmerman, 6-3, 6-1, and Marc Schumacher defeated 14th-ranked Michael Shyjan, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

WOMEN’S GOLF

U.S. International sophomore Kim Millies is tied for fourth place with one round remaining at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Kaneohe, Hawaii.

Milles’ 73-78--151 trails leader Debbie Parks (67-78--145) and third place Bonita Vista graduate Elizabeth Bowman of UCLA (76-74--150). UCLA’s Christy Erb (USDHS) is tied with Milles.

SOFTBALL

Karen Winkler was three for four with two triples and two RBIs to lead U.S. International to a 5-3 victory over host St. Mary’s in the second game of a double header. USIU (17-19) won the first game, 3-0.
