Notes: Mission Viejo’s string of Southern Section 4-A championships came to an end last May. After winning 14 consecutive titles, the Diablos finished second to Foothill. “The kids have been talking about getting the championship back since last season ended,” Mission Viejo Coach Mike Pelton said. “It was like something that belongs to them was taken away.” Mission Viejo is a heavy favorite among Orange County coaches to win the title again this season. Marina and Capistrano Valley figure to be the Diablos’ toughest challengers. Villa Park is a dark-horse team.

El Dorado is the county’s top 3-A team. The Golden Hawks have a strong core of swimmers. However, they will have a tough time unseating defending champion San Marino, which won the 1989 title by 87 points.

Woodbridge and Laguna Hills will the county’s top teams in the 2-A. Woodbridge shared the championship with San Luis Obispo last season.
