DIGEST : Simi Valley’s Duran Leads All-Southern Section Team

Simi Valley High goalkeeper Kim Duran, who missed almost half of the 1989-90 soccer season because of mononucleosis, was named to the All-Southern Section 4-A Division girls’ first team in a vote of coaches.

The Pioneer senior recorded 43 shutouts in three years at Simi Valley and led the Pioneers to the quarterfinals of the 4-A playoffs.

Pioneer stopper Missy Fiala and Phronsie Franco, a senior midfielder at Thousand Oaks, also were selected to the first team.

Moorpark senior Michele Peltonen was selected 1-A Defensive Player of the Year.

Other first-team 1-A selections include Oak Park sophomores Lisa Atkinson (defender) and Jenny Jeppson (midfielder). Senior midfielder Jesse Hearns was the only selection from Thacher.

Agoura’s Heidi Walters (senior forward) and Jill Gallegos (junior midfielder) and Buena midfielder Jennifer Henry were first-team picks at the 3-A level.

Alemany senior Robyn Renaud and Chaminade junior Katie Crespo were chosen for the 2-A first team at midfielder and defender, respectively.

Pierce Athletic Director Marian McWilliams said she is interviewing candidates for a women’s tennis coach.

Pierce, which won the women’s state championship in 1980, dropped the program this year because of a lack of players and the resignation of Coach Desi McBride in December. But McWilliams said, “We will have a team next year.

The second annual Burbank-Glendale All-Star Hoops Shootout, featuring top high school seniors from the area, will be played tonight at Woodbury University in Burbank. The girls’ game is set for 6 p.m. with the boys’ game at 8 p.m.

The boys’ teams will include Times’ All-Valley selections Marnie Calderon of Burroughs, Rick Osterloh of Harvard and Keith Weinstein of Grant, while the girls’ game will feature All-Valley selections Stacie Toon of Van Nuys and Kim Fischer of Notre Dame.

Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for high school students with identification.
