COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Canyons Routs Santa Monica, 12-2, Awaits Showdown With Moorpark

College of the Canyons defeated Santa Monica, 12-2, on Saturday to set up a showdown with Moorpark on Tuesday for first place in the Western State Conference baseball standings.

Canyons (18-8, 10-3) trails Moorpark by one game in the WSC, and each team has seven conference games remaining.

Against Santa Monica, Canyons freshman right-hander Roland De La Maza (4-1) threw his first complete game of the season, allowing four hits, striking out six and walking three.

All eight of Canyons’ hits were singles, and two Cougar players managed to keep lengthy hitting streaks alive. Ron Robart stretched his streak to 15 games with a two-run single in the fourth and Bill Horvat hit in his 12th consecutive game, finishing one for five.

Steve Kovacic and Josh Bergara each had two hits for visiting Canyons.

In other baseball games:

Moorpark 6, Bakersfield 4--Moorpark scored four runs in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and held on for a WSC victory at home.

Chris Bannon had the key hit, a two-run double, in Moorpark’s sixth. Willie Leighton (5-1) helped Moorpark improve to 16-7, 11-2. Leighton gave up eight hits and struck out six in 7 1/3 innings. Rob Teasdale threw 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief and struck out three to earn his fourth save.

Bakersfield is 4-9 in conference play.

Valley 10, Oxnard 5--Valley pounded out 16 hits to improve to .500 in the WSC. Valley (10-15-2, 6-6) has won four of its past five WSC games.

Freshman left-hander Steve Trainor (3-2) pitched four scoreless innings in relief of starter Dean Money to earn the win.

Valley’s Vladimir Pajcin was four for five with three RBIs and a double. E. J. Pape hit another of Valley’s five doubles, scored three runs and had two RBIs.

The Master’s 9, Biola 7--Senior Mark MacArthur had two hits--including a home run--drove in two runs and scored two more to lead Master’s (16-14, 6-6) in an NAIA District 3 game at home.

The Master’s trailed, 3-0, in the bottom of the fourth but rebounded with six hits, including three doubles and a home run, to score seven runs in the inning.

Sheldon Sparks added two hits, with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored.

Glendale 7, Pierce 6--Art Chute knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to thwart a Pierce comeback in a WSC game at Glendale.

Pierce (11-15, 4-9) trailed, 5-1, after six innings but pulled into a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth.

Kurt Lowry (6-5) threw a complete game for Pierce. Glendale’s Jaime Aguayo picked up the win after getting the final two outs in relief of starter Steve Dempsey.

Glendale (5-8 in conference) rapped five doubles and Paul Hugasian had two doubles and two RBIs. Chute also drove in two runs and was two for four with a double.

Santa Barbara 5, Ventura 4--The Pirates had the tying run at third base with one out in the seventh inning but were unable to bring the runner home in a WSC loss at Santa Barbara.

David Eggert and Ross Gotwals each went two for four for Ventura (14-10, 6-7).

San Bernardino Valley 18, Antelope Valley 5--San Bernardino used three home runs and an eight-run sixth inning to overcome a 4-2 deficit in a Foothill Conference game at San Bernardino (18-9, 7-4).

Chris Grant and Jim Estes each had two hits and Joel Swietzer doubled for Antelope Valley (6-20, 2-10).

Cal Lutheran 1-6, Claremont-Mudd 0-4--Freshman right-hander Tim Wimbish (4-2) threw a four-hit shutout for visiting Cal Lutheran in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader.

Wimbish struck out eight and walked two in his first shutout for the Kingsmen (15-9).

In the second game, Cal Lutheran scored all the runs it needed in a five-run first. Tim Lewis crushed a three-run home run to right center to spark the outburst. Leonard Matsumoto added a solo homer in the fifth inning. Dean Martinez (2-0) struck out eight in seven innings to earn the win.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 10-1, Southern California College 0-0--DeeAndra Pilkington (11-5) gave up two hits, struck out five and walked none to lead host Cal Lutheran in the first game. Tina Bumgarner had three hits, four RBIs and scored two runs.

In the second game, Leslie Stevens gave up only two hits, struck out nine and walked one in her second shutout. Bumgarner doubled and scored on Stevens’ triple for the only run.
