COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Smiths Help Moorpark Move Into WSC Lead

Twins Dan and Don Smith led a 17-hit attack Thursday as host Moorpark College pounded Santa Barbara, 10-2, and took sole possession of first place in the Western State Conference.

Dan Smith, the Raiders’ shortstop, went four for six with a run batted in, and Don Smith, an outfielder, was three for five, with two RBIs, a double and a home run.

Moorpark (17-7, 12-3 in WSC play) is a half-game ahead of Cuesta in conference play; Canyons, which began the day tied with Moorpark for first, was rained out.

Darin Furlong, Henry Schelb, Mike Suarez and Darren Aurand each had two hits for the Raiders.

John Dickenson, a freshman from Camarillo High, struck out five and allowed four singles in eight innings to improve to 2-0.

In other games:

Oxnard 11, Pierce 8 (10 innings)--Pat Avila of Oxnard slammed a three-run home run on the first pitch from reliever Juan Soriano with two on in the 10th inning to decide a WSC game at Pierce.

Pat Fairly of Pierce hit his second home run of the day, a two-run shot, in the ninth to tie the score, 8-8. Pat Huston doubled and homered for Pierce (11-17, 4-10).

Cuesta 4, Valley 3--Valley took a 2-0 lead in the first on E. J. Pape’s two-run double, but the Monarchs failed to make the lead stand.

Cuesta (11-3 in conference play) scored three runs in the sixth off starter Colin Hines and reliever Dan Carroll, and added another in the ninth off Steve Trainor.

Kevin Thomas was four for five for Valley (10-16-2, 7-7).

Azusa Pacific 11, Cal Lutheran 3--Peter Washington had three hits, including a two-run homer in the third, to lead Cal Lutheran (16-10, 7-6) in an NAIA District 3 game at Azusa Pacific.

Bo Rodriguez hit a three-run home run in the second inning for Azusa Pacific (19-9, 14-2).
