SPORTS NOTEBOOK : Dinner to Raise Football Funds

Cal State Long Beach hopes to raise $100,000 for its football program at a “Long Beach Welcomes George Allen” fund-raiser May 23 at the Spruce Goose.

Guests will include actor Walter Matthau, former jockey Willie Shoemaker and ex-football players Roman Gabriel, Deacon Jones and Billy Kilmer, all of whom played in the National Football League for Allen, who was named Long Beach coach last December.

The dinner will feature sports memorabilia, artwork and trips to Europe and New York.

Tickets are $100 per person and tables can be bought for either $1,000 or $2,000. For reservations, call 985-4134.

O’Bannon on TV: Artesia High School basketball star Ed O’Bannon will appear on the cable TV network ESPN at 9 a.m. Saturday in a tape of the recent Dapper Dan Classic in Pittsburgh.

O’Bannon scored 16 points in that game, which featured top high school seniors from throughout the nation.

He will also play in the McDonald’s All-American game, which will be televised on Channel 7 at noon Sunday from Indianapolis.

49ers to Sign Hannibal: Roderick Hannibal of Poly High School in Long Beach was expected to sign Wednesday with Cal State Long Beach. A 6-foot-4 guard, Hannibal averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds a game this season.
