STATWATCH : Simi Valley’s Consecutive League Losses a Rarity

Simi Valley High last week lost two consecutive Marmonte League games for the first time in six seasons. The Pioneers (7-6) dropped a 15-5 decision to Westlake and lost, 5-4, to Camarillo in nine innings.

The defeats dropped Simi Valley to 3-3 at the midway point of the league season and the Pioneers are in danger of posting their worst record since 1984, when they were 6-6. The Pioneers also are in serious jeopardy of failing to post at least 20 wins for the first time since 1984.

Simi Valley will play in the Chaparral tournament in Las Vegas this week along with Westlake (15-0, 6-0), the league leader.

League play resumes next week.

Hitting: St. Genevieve’s Josh Smith has an 11-game hitting streak. Teammate Mike Hoffman, who injured his shoulder sliding into second base and sat out two games, homered against Bell-Jeff in his first game back.

Joey Rosselli, Alemany’s ace left-hander, has amassed solid offensive numbers to match his pitching credentials. At the start of the week, he had a 1.14 earned-run average and 64 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings. He was batting .442 (23 for 52) with six doubles, two triples, three home runs and 17 runs batted in.

Antelope Valley right fielder Jeff Whiteford has earned a starting job since going 10 for 22 in the past seven games. Whiteford was four for five Friday against Saugus.
