TENNIS ROUNDUP : Bassett-Seguso Advances to Quarterfinals
Carling Bassett-Seguso, a former top-10 player who left the tour to have a baby two years ago, continued her comeback Thursday by defeating 12th-seeded Linda Ferrando, 6-4, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals of the $350,000 Bausch & Lomb tennis championships at Amelia Island, Fla.
Bassett-Seguso will meet Steffi Graf in the quarterfinals.
In other matches, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario beat Kathy Rinaldi, 6-0, 6-1; Zina Garrison beat Veronica Martinek, 6-4, 6-4; and defending champion Gabriela Sabatini beat Cathy Caverzasio, 6-4, 6-0.
Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Brad Gilbert, Aaron Krickstein, Michael Chang and Jim Grabb won their third-round matches in the $1.15-million Japan Open at Tokyo.
Lendl beat Joseph Russell, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, and Chang defeated Patrik Kuhnen, 7-5, 6-2.
Top-seeded Jay Berger of the United States defeated Jordi Arrese of Spain, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals at Barcelona, Spain.
