Host UCSD Advances to Softball Title Game

UC San Diego advanced to the championship game of the UCSD Triton Softball Tournament by defeating Brigham Young, 2-0, Friday at Triton Field. Lynn Morena scored UCSD’s final run on an error by the first baseman in the seventh inning.

UCSD (16-12) will play Cal State San Bernardino, which defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 4-0, in the championship game today at 3 p.m.

BASEBALL

San Diego State lost to host Nevada Reno, 7-3. Bill Dunckel went two for four with an RBI double for SDSU (29-14). Scott Denison went three for five. Nevada Reno is 19-18.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Edna Olivarez, ranked first in NCAA Division II, defeated Kim Wright, 6-2, 6-3, as Cal State Los Angeles defeated host Point Loma Nazarene, 5-4. At No. 5 singles, Eydie Pitney defeated Karen Lim, 7-6, 6-4, for PLNC, which also won two matches by default. At No. 2 doubles, Dede Walker and Sue Woodling defeated Lim and Ephel Olivarez, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, for PLNC (9-8). CS Los Angeles improved to 16-6.

RUGBY

The Old Mission Bay Athletic Club rugby team advanced to the semifinals of the Southwest Regional rugby tournament by defeating Tempe, 28-14, in Tempe. OMBAC (15-1) was led by Steve Forster with 14 points and Charlie Montgomery with eight. OMBAC will play Golden Gate today.

GOLF

Chris Starkjohnan of the Pala Mesa Golf Course shot four-under-par 72 to win the San Diego Chapter PGA Bridgestone Pro-Pro tournament at Oceanside Golf Course. Jeff Johnson (Singing Hills GC) and Frank Chapman (Oceanside GC) tied for second at 73.

SURFING

Five San Diego County surfers qualified for today’s Main Event in the $50,000 Dive N’ Surf Pro-Am at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach.

Justin Poston of Mission Beach, Rob Machado and John Siberell of Cardiff and Scott Blake and Chris Menzie of San Diego will compete against 32 seeded surfers today, with the final scheduled for Sunday.

Seeded competitors include three-time U.S. surfing champion Mike Lambresi of Oceanside, Sean Mattison and Paul Barr, both of Carlsbad and Rick Lasch of Del Mar.
