HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Westlake’s Eby Puts On a Show in Las Vegas

First, Westlake High’s Mike Eby supplied the thunder. Then he supplied the lightning.

Eby slammed a two-run home run in the sixth and struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to lead Westlake to a 4-3 win over host Las Vegas Valley in a consolation game of the Chaparral tournament game.

Eby’s home run gave Westlake a 3-2 lead, but Valley rallied to tie it in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the seventh, Keenan McAluney lined a one-out triple to right and scored the go-ahead run on Rob Neal’s sacrifice fly.

In other games:

Simi Valley 8, San Diego Montgomery 5--Senior catcher Brandon Banaga’s grand slam gave Simi Valley a 5-0 lead in the first inning and Brian Vasey allowed one earned run to lead the Pioneers in a Chaparral tournament consolation game.

Vasey (1-0) struck out five, walked four and was two for three. Kenny Hood also had two hits for Simi Valley (9-8).

Crespi 12, Serra 2--Crespi took advantage of 12 walks and six errors in a first-round game of the St. Paul tournament that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Chris Maurizi was three for four, scored four runs, and Brodie Van Wagenen was two for three with two runs batted in for Crespi (11-5).

Notre Dame 5, Concord De La Salle 4--Steve Colella’s two-out, two-run home run in the first inning gave host Notre Dame a lead it didn’t relinquish in a first-round game of the St. Paul tournament. Eric Vellozi (3-2) went the distance for Notre Dame (10-6-1).

Alemany 15, Salesian 0--Three young pitchers combined to limit Salesian to two hits in a first-round game of the St. Paul tournament at Alemany.

Sophomore Kevin Tate (2-3) earned the win, and two freshmen, Rob Mary and Chris Tashima, pitched in relief for Alemany (9-9).
