After the Garlic Classic, Hart Emerges Smelling Like a Rose

Hart High returned from Gilroy, Calif., a happier team after battering four opponents en route to the championship of the inaugural Garlic Classic.

The Indians, who entered the tournament with a .274 team batting average, collected 50 hits in 118 at-bats (.424), outscored opponents, 52-6, and raised their batting average to .313. Senior Lance Migita, who entered the tournament batting .325, was eight for 14, including two home runs, and raised his average to .389.

Pitchers Andrew Lorraine (5-0), Keith Halcovich (3-1) and Kevin Foderaro (5-0) each recorded complete-game victories, lowering the team’s earned-run average to 1.82.

Miscellaneous: Camarillo played four consecutive extra-inning games last week, including three in two days in the Thousand Oaks tournament. “We were pretty tired,” Coach Jack Willard said. “It seemed like we were out there forever.”

Westlake’s streak of consecutive stolen bases ended at 28 last week when Keenan McAluney was thrown out in a 14-3 win over Basic of Nevada in the Chaparral tournament in Las Vegas. Westlake has stolen 42 bases in 44 tries.
