PREP ROUNDUP : La Quinta Wins Volleyball Match, Remains on Top in Garden Grove

The Rancho Alamitos High School boys’ volleyball team had a chance to gain a tie for first place in the Garden Grove League, but La Quinta defeated the Vaqueros in four games to retain sole possession.

Chris Douherty had 17 kills to lead La Quinta to a 15-5, 15-13, 9-15, 15-8 victory. La Quinta is 10-1 overall, 9-0 in league. Rancho Alamitos is 7-2 in league.

In other Garden Grove League matches:

Garden Grove 3, Los Amigos 0--Joe Squyres had 10 kills and Alex Ripley had 10 blocks as host Garden Grove (8-7, 5-4) won, 15-3, 15-8, 15-10.

Pacifica 3, Santiago 1--Tony Kennedy had 11 kills to lead Pacifica to a 15-3, 10-15, 15-10, 15-13 victory.

In the Empire League:

Foothill 3, Cypress 0--John Newcomb had seven kills and Scott McKittrick had six to lead Foothill (10-1, 5-0) to a 15-1, 15-5, 15-9 victory at Foothill.

El Dorado 3, Santa Ana 1--Mike Bradach had 17 kills and 10 stuff blocks and El Dorado (5-4, 3-2) won, 8-15, 16-14, 15-2, 15-6, at Santa Ana.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 3, Fountain Valley 1--Scott Jahr had six kills and Ted Barsh had four kills to lead host Huntington Beach (8-2, 4-1) to a 15-0, 15-5, 11-15, 16-14 victory.

In Orange League boys’ swimming:

Valencia 97, Western 39--Jeff Myers won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes 14.2 seconds and won the 100 freestyle (53.1) to lead visiting Valencia (4-0).

In Orange League girls’ swimming:

Valencia 97, Western 41--Roxanne Rangel won the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.7) and the 100 butterfly (1:06.3) to lead visiting Valencia (5-0).

In Sea View League boys’ swimming:

Newport Harbor 126, Saddleback 24--Dietrich Jewell won the 500 free in 4:55.23, the 200 free in 1:54.4 and helped Newport Harbor’s 400 free relay win in 3:22.20. Newport Harbor is 5-2, 4-0.

In Sea View League girls’ swimming:

Newport Harbor 102, Saddleback 32--Jennifer Bloomfield, Jenny Pence, Allison Jones and Maureen McLaren helped Newport Harbor qualify for the Southern Section preliminaries in the 400 freestyle relay (3:57.36).

In Empire League girls’ swimming:

Los Alamitos 116, El Dorado 38--Los Alamitos (7-1, 4-0) won every event at El Dorado. Nicole Williamson won the 100 butterfly (1:01.82) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.3).

In nonleague golf:

Estancia 400, Sunny Hills 409 (18 holes)--Andy Rothman shot three-over-par 75 to lead Estancia (10-1) at Los Coyotes.

Valencia 409, Foothill 437 (18 holes)--Kengo Takahashi shot four-over 76 for Valencia (13-0) at Santa Ana County Club.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Western 18, Anaheim 0--The team of Anand Jethva and Tom Tran won its doubles sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Western (12-2, 7-2) at Anaheim.

Valencia 17, Magnolia 1--The team of Jason Bae and Chris Seki , won its sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0, for host Valencia (13-1, 10-0).

In Sea View League boys’ tennis:

University 15, Estancia 3--No. 2 singles player John Bowerbank (7-6, 6-0, 6-0) swept for host University (10-3, 6-1).

Corona del Mar 16, Saddleback 2--Grant Michaelson swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, to lead visiting Corona del Mar (13-2, 8-0).

In Empire League boys’ tennis:

Esperanza 11, Katella 7--The No. 1 doubles team of Dan Harris and Jim Stewart swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting Esperanza (12-3, 6-0).
