Bright Again Heads Field of 14 3-Year-Olds in Arkansas

Bright Again, who finished second to Summer Squall in the Jim Beam, and Real Cash, fourth in the Santa Anita Derby, head a field of 14 3-year-olds entered in Saturday’s $500,000 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.

Summer Squall, Santa Anita Derby winner Mister Frisky and unbeaten Champagneforashley have emerged as the leading contenders for the May 5 Derby at Churchill Downs.

Bright Again, Real Cash and the others in Saturday’s race are trying to earn a ticket to Louisville, Ky.

Bright Again, who will carry 118 pounds under the conditions of the race, was established as the 2-1 favorite. Real Cash, who will carry 122, and stablemate Power Lunch are rated at 3-1.

Pat Day, who is to ride Summer Squall in the Kentucky Derby, has the mount on Bright Again. Jose Santos rides Real Cash.

The third choice at 5-1 is Tarascon, who won the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn and was favored in the Rebel on March 31 but ran third. Trainer Jack Van Berg has replaced Larry Snyder with Jorge Velasquez.

At 6-1 is Silver Ending, winner of El Camino Real Derby. Gary Stevens, regular rider of Mister Frisky, is to ride.
