Latino Influx Brings Change to Huntington Park

It is unfortunate that this otherwise well-written story was marred by a choice of words that could serve to increase polarity between Latinos and Anglos.

The writers described the congregation of St. Matthias Catholic Church as “more than 600 Latinos.” The congregation of Community Congregational Church was described two paragraphs later as “about 25 whites.” What was presented as an article about cultural differences became, after that lapse, an article about racial differences. Please advise your writers and editors that “white” is not the opposite of “Latino,” and that Latinos are not members of a different race.
