NBA ROUNDUP : Hawks Win Again, but They Are Finished

Share

The Atlanta Hawks will have all summer to wonder why they didn’t play the rest of the NBA season the way they did the last 10 days.

With Dominique Wilkins scoring 21 of his 36 points in the third quarter, the Hawks closed out their season with a 130-109 victory over the Miami Heat at Atlanta. The Hawks wound up with a 41-41 record, failing by one victory to qualify for the playoffs.

They won six out of their last seven games, including road wins against Detroit, Philadelphia and New York.

“But we blew the playoffs a long time ago,” Wilkins said. “It’s a real disappointing situation. But we played hard.

“I never expected not to be playing in the first round. It seems like we lost 100 games we should have won.”

It was also the last game for Miami. In their second season, the Heat lost 10 of its last 11, but with an 18-64 record, finished three games better than it did last season.

Moses Malone made five free throws and needs four more to tie Oscar Robertson’s NBA record of 7,685.

Milwaukee 96, New Jersey 95--The Nets were less than four seconds away from ending their losing streak on the road. But Fred Roberts banked in a shot with 3.3 seconds left and the Nets ended their season with their 28th consecutive loss away from home.

Roberts’ shot gave the Bucks their only lead in the second half.

The Nets (17-64) are tied with Orlando for the worst record in the league.

Portland 118, Sacramento 110--Drazen Petrovic scored 24 points at Portland to lead the Trail Blazers to their 58th victory.

The Kings finished at 23-59, the worst record for the franchise since 1959-60 when, as the Cincinnati Royals, they were 19-56.
