COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Sweet’s Single Lifts Chapman, 5-2

Torrie Sweet had a two-run single in the sixth inning to break a tie and help Chapman College to a 5-2 victory over the University of San Diego in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at San Diego.

Chapman added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings and San Diego scored a run in the ninth before Dave Paveloff got the final out for his first save.

Pete Coleman (7-5) pitched the first five innings, allowing five hits and a run, to get the victory for Chapman (24-19). San Diego is 20-27.

In nonconference baseball:

UC Irvine 8, San Diego State 3--Fred Combs doubled in two runs and Shelby Niss tripled in two more and the Anteaters scored five in the first inning at home. Combs went four for four, Niss went three for four and Al Rodriguez went three for five for Irvine (28-20). Ken Whitworth (11-4) pitched eight innings, allowing 11 hits, striking out seven and walking two.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 5, Cal Baptist 1--Raphael Garcia (5-5), who allowed six hits, struck out nine and walked four in 8 2/3 innings, went three for four, with three RBIs as host SCC (25-15, 11-5) moved into second place past Cal Baptist (10-6 in the Golden State Conference). Joe Aversa went two for four and Sean Maharg went two for two for SCC. Jim Dedrick got the last out in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Westmont 9, Christ College Irvine 1--Brent Johnson had an RBI single in the ninth for the only run scored by host Christ College Irvine.
