MERCED, Calif. —
A truck driver was killed when his tractor-trailer rig was struck by a southbound freight train in northern Merced County, the California Highway Patrol said.
Charles Crippen, 67, of Modesto, was driving the truck filled with milk from a nearby dairy across the Santa Fe Railroad tracks when it was struck by the train traveling about 50 m.p.h., said CHP Officer Sam Samra.
The officer said the train’s whistle had been sounded about 300 feet away, but that the truck driver could not get clear in time.
