Senior shotputter Brent Noon of Fallbrook High moved into second place on the National all-time list with a throw of 76-feet-2 in Fallbrook’s 85-50 dual meet victory over Torrey Pines on Thursday.
Noon’s mark pushed aside Arnold Campbell, who in 1984 hit a 74-10 1/2 put while competing in Louisiana.
Noon is now within 10 inches of the all-time official record of 77-0, held by Michael Carter since 1979. Unofficially, Carter also had a throw of 81-0. Carter now is a defensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers.
Noon’s six puts Thursday all were over 72-0: 74-3, 73-11 3/4, 72-3 1/4, 74-4, 73-0 1/4, and 76-2.
The 76-2 also improves Noon’s all-time state best and this year’s national best of 74-4, which he set just last week. However, because of Section rules, Noon’s Section record remains 74-4.
Noon also had a 196-6 discus throw Thursday. He is the state leader in that event.
