Middle Infielders’ Bats Essential to Hart

For three seasons at Hart High, Rob Davis, a 5-foot-9 shortstop, and Lance Migita, a 5-7 second baseman, have been the Indians’ unmistakable offensive leaders.

At the start of the week, Davis had a .413 career batting average (104 for 252) with 29 extra-base hits and 79 runs batted in. Migita is batting .421 with 31 extra-base hits and 67 RBIs.

This season, Davis is batting a team-high .462 with a team-high seven doubles. Migita, who was batting only .222 in March, is batting .417 with team-high totals of five home runs and 26 RBIs.

Batting: Sylmar junior Dereck Ornelas has established himself as a player to watch next season. The 5-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter has a 14-game hitting streak in which he has driven in 25 runs and hit four home runs. He has a .521 batting average (25 for 48) during the streak. . . .

Saugus catcher J. B. Johnson, who has six home runs this season, needs one more to tie Don Pedersen (11) for second place on the school career list. Saugus has 17 home runs, three short of the school single-season record. . . .

Saugus shortstop Walter White had a school-record streak of seven consecutive hits snapped last week. The streak extended over three games. White, who has 10 hits in his past 12 at-bats, is batting a team-high .468. . . .

Chaminade’s Ted Corcoran, who is batting a team-high .394, had a streak of eight consecutive hits in league play snapped against St. Genevieve last week.

Miscellaneous: Hart is 88-18-2 in four years under Coach Bud Murray. The Indians (21-1-2) have won 18 in a row. . . .

Sylmar has clinched a berth in the City Section 4-A Division baseball playoffs, marking the team’s 21st consecutive postseason appearance. . . .
