Man, 72, Fatally Stabbed in Apparent Robbery
A 72-year-old man was stabbed to death in his Montebello home during an apparent robbery, police said Thursday.
Friends found Joe Charles Mellis dead when they went to his home in the 200 block of South 4th Street to check on him Wednesday night. He lived alone. Investigators estimated that Mellis had been dead 12 to 24 hours when his body was found.
Police declined to say whether anything was taken from Mellis’ home or whether it was ransacked.
