Pat Riley, the Associated Press coach of the decade for the 1980s, has been named the NBA’s coach of the year for the first time, the Lakers announced Sunday night.

The award is voted on by NBA writers.

Riley, who recently passed Boston’s Red Auerbach as the all-time leader in playoff victories, guided the Lakers to an NBA-best record of 63-19 this season. He has coached the team to four NBA championships and has a career record of 533-194, a .733 winning percentage.
