A San Diego policeman was released from the hospital Monday after being shot in the neck Sunday by a robbery suspect, authorities said.

Officer John McGill, 29, was shot in the neck and grazed on the shoulder late Sunday afternoon while chasing the suspect, Steven Lon Nead, 36, of San Diego, from a robbery at a Mobil station on Mission Center Road in Mission Valley, police said.

McGill chased Nead south on Interstate 805 until the man’s car left the freeway and crashed into a row of parked cars in the 3300 block of Lincoln Avenue, police said. Nead, 36, ran down an alley and into a back yard in the 4000 block of Wabash Street in East San Diego, where he fired two shots, striking McGill, police said.

McGill returned fire, and Nead was later treated for a superficial gunshot wound at UC San Diego Medical Center and released.

Nead is being held in County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, armed robbery and auto theft.
