UCSD Women Advance to Final

UC San Diego advanced to the final of the NCAA Division 3 team championships by routing No. 3-seed University of the South, 8-1, at Swarthmore, Penn., on Tuesday.

The top-seeded Tritons (16-4) will play No. 2-seed Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), a 5-4 winner over Pomona Pitzer. UCSD defeated Gustavus Adolphus, 8-1, in La Jolla earlier in the year.

UCSD’s Christine Behrens won at No. 1 singles over Cameron Tyer, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

MEN’S TENNIS

UCSD finished 10th in the NCAA Division 3 team championships, losing to Gustavus Adolphus, 5-1, in a consolation round at Swarthmore, Penn.

BASEBALL

USD junior Rick Doane was named co-Most Valuable Player along with junior right-hander Tom Cheek, at the team’s baseball awards banquet.

Doane, a first baseman, finished the year with a .342 average, 43 RBIs, 42 runs and 13 home runs. He also had an slugging percentage of .524.

Cheek is a relief pitcher who went 7-6, earned eight saves and compiled a 3.89 ERA.

Other award winners were: left-hander Lou Skertich, outstanding pitcher; third baseman Kevin Herde, rookie of the year; catcher Sean Gousha, gold glove; outfielder Devin Bundy, most improved; and outfielder Dan McAdoo, most hustle.

No. 11 Loyola Marymount beat U.S. International in the season finale for both team, 15-12, at USIU despite a seven-run eighth-inning by USIU.

LMU (46-13) built an 11-0 lead in the first four innings against USIU (15-44-1).

MEN’S GOLF

UC San Diego was one of 22 teams selected to the NCAA Division III Tournament to be held at the Indian Mound Golf Course on Jekyll Island, Georgia. The Tritons are ranked ninth.
