COMMUNITY COLLEGE STATE SOFTBALL : Cypress, Golden West to Open Play Friday

Cypress and Golden West start play Friday in the state community college softball tournament at Sunnyvale.

Cypress (40-6) will play Ohlone (41-9) and Golden West (33-14) will take on West Valley (39-2) in the first round. In other games, Sacramento City (41-4) will play Moorpark (29-9) and defending state champion Palomar (44-4) will meet Fresno (44-18).

All of the first-round games of the double-elimination tournament start at 10 a.m. The tournament continues Saturday, with the title game at noon Sunday.

Cypress, which won the Orange Empire Conference, easily defeated Antelope Valley and Grossmont in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Cypress is led by a pair of 20-game winners. Sally Dugas (20-4) pitched 11 shutouts and had an 0.50 earned-run average, and teammate Laura Corson (20-2) had 12 shutouts, two no-hitters, and an ERA of 0.57.

Golden West defeated Long Beach in the first round Wednesday, then had to sweep a doubleheader from Orange Coast Sunday to advance.

The Rustlers are led by pitcher Lisa Kaufman, who is 21-7 with an 0.61 ERA. Gretchen Bock batted .389 with 56 hits, both school records.
