PREP COACHES : Los Alamitos Baseball Coach Mike Gibson Will Resign After Season

Mike Gibson, the baseball coach at Los Alamitos High School for the past six years, announced that he will resign after the season.

Gibson, 50, has posted a 97-64 record going into today’s 5-A playoff game against Ocean View. His teams have qualified for the playoffs six times and has helped develop all-county stars Greg Pirkl, Mike Kelly, Rob Nen, J.T. Snow and Robbie Katzaroff.

Gibson said he would continue teaching health education but was retiring for health reasons after 26 years of coaching, including 21 seasons in the baseball and basketball programs at Los Alamitos.

“I have a very light complexion and my doctor discovered a light tumor in my skin and suggested that I resign from coaching,” Gibson said.

The Los Alamitos position is expected to attract applications from some of the top coaches in the area. Kennedy’s Chris Pascal, a former Los Alamitos player, said he is interested in the job, as did Irvine’s Bob Flint and Lakewood’s Spud O’Neil.

Los Alamitos’ junior varsity team won the Empire League title this year and its frosh-soph team won 18 games.
