SOUTHERN SECTION SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Weil Pitches No-Hitter to Lead Hart to 7-1 Win
Senior right-hander Kym Weil lost her perfect game and shutout in the seventh inning but still threw a no-hitter to lead Hart High to a 7-1 win over Rio Mesa Friday in a first-round Southern Section 4-A Division softball playoff game at Hart.
Rio Mesa (13-10) scored in the seventh when a runner reached base on a fielding error and scored on a throwing error.
Weil (25-2) struck out 12 and walked none.
Heather Medearis and Stephanie Keeler each had two hits for Hart (26-3), the top-seeded team in the division. Hart will play Torrance, a 3-0 winner over Long Beach Poly on Friday, on Tuesday.
In other 4-A games:
Crescenta Valley 2, Burroughs 1--Both Crescenta Valley runs scored on errors in the second inning at Montrose Field.
Becki Mixon (24-2), a sophomore, struck out eight and scattered five hits for the Falcons.
Buena 4, Hoover 0--Freshman Nancy Evans struck out 10 and allowed six hits, but Hoover (17-6) stranded 10 runners and fell in the first round to host Buena (19-6).
1-A DIVISION
Paraclete 11, Oak Park 0--Laura Staats held Oak Park (16-8) to three hits and struck out 13. Kelli Rommey had two Oak Park hits.
La Reina 9, San Gabriel Mission 3--Sheri Sisco struck out 17, and Valerie Serpico hit a home run, the first time a ball has cleared the fence at La Reina in more than five years.
Serpico’s two-run home run cleared a fence 190 feet away in right-center field. Sisco (7-2), a senior right-hander, struck out eight in a row at one point for La Reina (21-5).
Santa Paula 12, Village Christian 0--Santa Paula senior left-hander Julie Coert (4-4) struck out six, allowed only three hits, walked none and helped her own cause with a run-scoring double.
Santa Paula (13-13) will play La Reina in a second-round game Wednesday.
Agoura 11, L.A. Baptist 0--Junior right-hander Melissa Thatcher (20-5) threw a one-hitter and hit a two-run double against visiting L. A. Baptist.
Jill Hartwig was two for four with a three-run triple for Agoura (21-5).
SMALL SCHOOLS DIVISION
Crossroads 19, Highland Hall 11--Crossroads’ Melony Berkey was three for four with two doubles and two RBIs against visiting Highland Hall.
Stephanie Reisberg had three hits, and Rebecca Bloom (11-5) earned the win for Crossroads (12-6).
Ribet Academy 7, Oakwood 3--Ribet Academy’s Kate Stoll, a converted catcher, pitched a no-hitter but walked 14 at Ribet Academy.
