Three SDSU Players Selected as All-WAC

San Diego State’s Brian Grebeck, Jeff Barry and Eric Christopherson were named to the All-Western Athletic Conference baseball team Tuesday.

Grebeck, a senior shortstop, led the Aztecs this season with nine home runs and was second with 53 runs-batted in. Barry, a junior outfielder, batted .311 and led the team with 55 RBIs. Christopherson, a junior, was second on the team with at .349. Christopherson is SDSU’s catcher but made the All-WAC team as a designated hitter.

Three players from the University of San Diego--Tom Cheek, Kevin Herde and Dave Pingree--were named to the All-West Coast Conference second team.

Cheek, a junior pitcher, had a 7-6 record in a school-record 37 appearances with eight saves and 68 strikeouts. Herde, a freshman designated hitter, hit .330 with seven home runs and 43 RBIs. Dave Pingree, a freshman utility player, had a .306 average with 34 RBIs.

GOLF

UC San Diego was tied for 12th after the first day of the NCAA Division III men’s tournament at Jekyll Island, Ga.

UCSD had 310 strokes, the same as Ramapo. Methodist was first at 293. Mike Reinhard was UCSD’s low scorer with a 73, three strokes behind leader Rob Pilewski of Methodist. UCSD’s Devin Thomas shot 78.

SOCCER

The San Diego Nomads will play an exhibition game against TSV Bayer Leverkusen at 7:30 tonight at Torrey Pines High School.

TSV Bayer Leverkusen, a top international team that won the UEFA Cup in 1988, includes top players from East Germany and Poland. Nomad Coach Derek Armstrong said it is the best team the Nomads have ever played.

TENNIS

Shannon Anderson of Point Loma Nazarene lost to No. 4 Eva Helmersson of Boca Raton (Fla.), 6-0, 6-1, in the third round of the NAIA women’s championships.

Anderson and Kim Wright won in the first round of doubles but were eliminated in the second by Sara Rafael and Shelle Showalter of St. Ambrose (Iowa), 7-5, 6-7 (11-9), 6-4. Dion Shillito and Tiffany Puckett of PLNC were also eliminated in the second round by Lynne Taylor and Elaine Rivers of Arkansas Little Rock, 6-1, 6-0.

Dede Walker and Sue Woodling of PLNC lost in the first round. It was the Crusaders’ first trip to the national tournament.
