Chatsworth Cyclist 66th in Tour of Italy
John Tomac of Chatsworth moved into 66th place in cycling’s Tour of Italy on Saturday after a 42nd-place finish in the mountainous La Spezia-to-Langhirano stage.
Tomac completed the 109.12 miles in 5 hours 9 minutes 47 seconds, 5:32 behind winner Vladimir Poulnikov of the Soviet Union.
Tomac, who entered Saturday’s stage 95th, trails leader Gianni Bugno of Italy by 34:30.
Tomac remains the top U. S. rider in a field that also includes reigning Tour de France champion Greg LeMond.
LeMond, plagued by injury and illness throughout this season, is 133rd, 1:21:40 behind Bugno.
Marianne Spencer, Betsy Lund and Heather Clark of Antelope Valley College were named to the All-Foothill Conference softball team, as chosen by coaches.
Spencer, a pitcher, was 7-5 with a 2.57 earned-run average. Lund, an infielder, batted .339 with 15 runs batted in and Clark, an outfielder, batted .359.
Cheri Bainbridge and Pam Craycraft, also of Antelope Valley, were named to the all-conference second team.
