A 24-year-old Ventura man was in serious condition Sunday after his Volkswagen bug went off Pacific Coast Highway onto rocks above the ocean, authorities said.

At 9:35 p.m. Saturday, Ruben Washington was driving north on the highway about 1.2 miles south of Big Sycamore Canyon when he veered onto the right shoulder of the road, the California Highway Patrol said.

Washington, who was later arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, tried to correct his steering and lost control, the CHP said. The car rolled off the road and was caught on the rocks.

Washington was thrown onto the rocks and suffered scalp lacerations, broken ribs and an injured hip, said Margaret Whelan, nursing supervisor at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.

Passengers Devin Jenkins, 24, and Edward Willowby, 20, both of Gardena, remained in the car and were unhurt.
