Terry Tewell, a sophomore catcher from Cypress College, and Gary Christopherson a freshman from Golden West, signed professional baseball contracts Sunday.
Tewell, who hit .343 with six home runs and 42 runs batted in, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, the team that drafted him last year. Tewell was a two-time all-Orange Empire Conference player.
Tewell reports Friday to the Phillies’ minor league team in Clearwater, Fla.
Christopherson, who batted .386 with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs for Golden West, signed with the Houston Astros. Christopherson, who was used mostly at designated hitter, was also an all-Orange Empire Conference player. He was drafted last spring as a senior at Ocean View High School.
Christopherson reports June 13 to the Astros’ Class-A team in Kissimmee, Fla.
Players who were drafted last June but didn’t sign remain the property of the team until the June 4 draft this year.
