Tarver, Thomas to Play in Olympic Festival

Shon Tarver, a shooting guard from Santa Clara High, and Dedan Thomas, a 6-0 guard who played for Taft High and Antelope Valley College, have been selected to participate in the Olympic Festival as members of the West region basketball squad.

The Olympic festival is being held in Minneapolis, July 3-11, and the West team will be coached by Don Monson of Oregon.

Matt Whisenant, a freshman left-hander from Glendale College, signed last week with Philadelphia and will join the Phillies’ rookie league team in Martinsville, Va.

Whisenant, who graduated from La Canada High, was drafted in the 18th round last June.

Andrew Lorraine of Hart High has been selected to play on the South team in the California Baseball Coaches Assn. three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday at San Jose State.

John Yakel has been named to replace Tom Moran as baseball coach at St. Francis High.

Yakel, 24, a 1984 St. Francis graduate, was a varsity assistant under Moran the past two seasons.

Dain Turner, Mission College’s leader in batting average and home runs, has signed a letter of intent to play for Cal State Los Angeles, Mission Coach John Klitsner said.

Several Glendale College baseball players have orally commited to four-year colleges. Right-handed pitcher Steve Dempsey has committed to Cal Lutheran; infielder Darron McWhorter will walk on at Cal State Long Beach. Jaime Aguayo, a right-handed pitcher, and catcher Aldo Angrisani of Hoover have both committed to La Verne.
