NOTEBOOK : La Canada’s Larez Will Coach Glendale-Area Football Team in All-Star Game With Burbank

Nic Larez, football coach at La Canada High, will coach the Glendale-area all-stars in the second annual Glendale-Burbank High School All-Star Football Game on June 30 at La Canada’s Spartan Stadium.

Bill Foster of Van Nuys High is the coach of the Burbank-area team.

Seventy-two graduating seniors will participate in the game. Rosters will be released next week.

Local Yakel: John Yakel has been named to replace Tom Moran as baseball coach at St. Francis High. Moran left to become principal at Chaminade.

Yakel, 24, graduated from St. Francis in 1984 and was an assistant under Moran the past two seasons.

“They like to keep their own people involved,” Yakel said. “It keeps the tradition alive.”

Changing recent tradition might be prudent--St. Francis was 6-11 this season and finished fourth in Del Rey League play.

Getting her kicks: Heather Morein, a sophomore at Glendale High, is part of a U. S. soccer team that will compete this summer in Denmark and Great Britain.

Morein, 15, is a halfback who played at La Canada last season before transferring to Glendale.

Chute to kill: Glendale College first baseman Art Chute, who has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Fullerton, has been named to the All-Southern California and all-state first teams.

Chute, a redshirt sophomore, hit a school-record 11 home runs this season.

Transfer time: Several Glendale College baseball players have chosen four-year colleges.

Vaquero Coach Steve Coots said that Steve Dempsey, a sophomore right-hander from L.A. Lutheran High, has committed to Cal Lutheran, and Darron McWhorter, a sophomore infielder from Blair, will walk on at Cal State Long Beach. Jaime Aguayo, a sophomore right-hander from South Pasadena, and sophomore catcher Aldo Angrisani of Hoover have both committed to La Verne.

Going down: Eliazar Herrera of Hoover High will compete in the 3,000 meters Friday at the Golden West Invitational in Sacramento, a meet that attracts many of the nation’s top high school seniors.

Hererra, who will attend UCLA next year, placed second in the 3,200 meters Saturday at the state track and field championships at Cerritos College, clocking 8 minutes 58.97 seconds--the third-fastest time in the nation this year.

Herrera placed second in the Southern Section 4-A Division finals in 9:06.43 three weeks ago and improved to 9:00.29 the following week in placing third in the Masters Meet.

Herrera’s teammate, Creighton Harris, placed fifth in his heat of the 1,600 meters in a personal-best 4:14.33 Friday in the state-meet preliminaries.

Harris missed the ninth and final berth in Saturday’s final by 0.28 seconds.

In the swim: The long-awaited opening of the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center will take place June 16-17 with a community water festival.

Designed as a public facility capable of hosting world-class events, the Pasadena center features two 50-meter pools.

Water-festival activities include a triathlon, children’s and masters’ meets, a local high school all-star water polo match, exhibitions in diving and synchronized swimming, and demonstrations of specialized programs--including swim lessons for beginners and rehabilitation programs for the physically challenged.

Honor roll: Occidental catcher Mike Kniseley and pitcher Dave Stoll were selected to the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team by a vote of conference coaches.

Kniseley, a senior catcher, hit seven home runs and tied a school record with 48 runs batted in as the Tigers finished 20-12 overall and 12-6 in SCIAC play. Kniseley also was selected to the All-West Region first team.

Stoll, a sophomore left-hander who was 6-3 with a 2.81 earned-run average this spring, and struck out 81 batters in 99 innings, was selected to the All-West second team.

Junior shortstop Mark Harris, who batted .442, was second-team All-SCIAC and second-team All-West.

More honors: New Orleans Saints Coach Jim Mora, of the Occidental College class of 1957, will be the featured speaker Friday night at Occidental’s Scholar-Athlete awards banquet.

Sixty senior athletes with grade-point averages of 3.2 or higher will be honored.

Three men and three women are finalists for the Scholar Athlete of the Year awards.

The women are Heather Beach (track, volleyball); Jenyne Condon (volleyball); and Louise Colter (track and soccer).

The men include Jay Caba, the school’s first All-American in soccer and a basketball player as well; Ethan Caldwell (basketball); and Tony Ferguson (football).

Camp ground: Occidental College will host youth camps in tennis and basketball beginning in July.

Brian Newhall, the men’s basketball and tennis coach, will conduct the camps.

Four one-week tennis sessions for boys and girls ages 8-16 will be conducted in the morning.

Three weeklong basketball sessions for boys 8-17 will be held in the afternoons.
