CS Northridge Finishes as Runner-Up in CCAA All-Sports Standings

Cal State Northridge finished second in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. All-Sports standings in men’s and women’s athletics for the 1989-90 school year.

Northridge, set to move to the NCAA Division I level in all sports except football starting in the fall, won CCAA titles in men’s soccer and women’s softball and tied for first in baseball.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which won three CCAA men’s championships, and four women’s (one tie), easily won the men’s and women’s All-Sports title.

Keyaan Cook of Montclair Prep finished his career with four school records and placed high in two categories on the all-time Southern Section list. The senior shortstop’s 142 hits broke the school record of 133 set by Tom McKay in 1979-1982 and place him second in Southern Section history behind Scott Davison of Redondo, who had 147 in 1986-88.

Cook also had 120 runs batted in to break Rocco Buffolino’s school record of 102 set in 1979-1982. The total ranks him fourth in Southern Section history behind Davison, who had 147. Cook’s batting average of .470 and 18 home runs also are school records.

Pitcher Lea Lopez, who led the Newbury Park High softball team to a runner-up finish in the Southern Section 5-A Division, was named co-most valuable player in the 5-A along with Janet Miyahara of Marina.

Hart’s Kym Weil, who set a Southern Section career record for wins, was co-MVP in the 4-A along with Kelly Hunt of Charter Oak.

Pitcher Melissa Thatcher of Agoura’s 1-A championship team was named MVP of that division. Agoura Coach Linda Moule was tabbed 1-A Coach of the Year.

Agoura High teammates Bob Kazmirski and Brian Smith were named co-MVPs in Frontier League baseball, and Gary Gray of Agoura was chosen league coach of the year.

Kazmirski hit .450, Smith .448.

Two sessions of the San Fernando Valley Volleyball Camp for boys and girls aged 10 to 15 will be held next month.

The camp, conducted by Chatsworth High girls’ Coach Steve Berk, is designed for beginners. The first session runs from July 9-13, the second from July 16-20.

The Bob Lofrano Brahma Baseball Camp will be conducted at Pierce College in two one-week sessions, June 25-29 and July 9-13, for players aged 8 to 16.

Jeff Burdick and Mike Terzian, seniors at Chaminade High, will attempt to make the rosters of college football teams next fall as walk-on players.

Burdick, a 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back and receiver, will walk on at Oregon.

Terzian (6-2 1/2, 230), who was a defensive lineman and kicker, will walk on at UC Davis.

Andrew Lorraine, a senior left-hander from Hart High, said that he was selected in the 37th round of the amateur baseball draft by the New York Mets.

Lorraine, who has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Stanford, said that he will turn down the Mets in order to play for the Cardinal.

Lorraine was 9-0 with an 0.91 ERA and 138 strikeouts in 85 innings.

Skipper Bob Wolfe of the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club won the third Cruiser Navigation contest in the 1990 Santa Barbara Channel Series on Saturday.

Skippers Don Olin, Harold Van Vickl and Ray Bouche finished second through fourth, respectively, in boats representing Channel Islands Yacht Club.

Two boats representing the Ventura Yacht Club won the perpetual trophy for the eighth Women’s Invitational Race on June 2.

Ventura’s winning team consisted of a boat skippered by Jean Crew and club commodore Dottie Massa and another skippered by Joan Thorpe.

The Nordhoff High girls’ track team will be honored at a California Angels baseball game on Tuesday for having the highest grade-point average among Southern Section teams.

The Rangers hold a composite GPA of 3.54.

Alemany High is searching for a basketball coach to replace Rocky Moore, who has accepted a coaching position at Muir. Pius X Coach Mike Murphy was offered the job but declined, according to Alemany Athletic Director Dudley Rooney.

Dani Piotrowski, a senior shortstop on the Cal Lutheran softball team, has been chosen a third-team, college-division Academic All-American in voting by sports information directors.

A two-time NAIA scholar-athlete selection, Piotrowski batted .282 with 22 stolen bases and carried a 3.84 grade-point average while studying elementary education as a liberal arts major.

Mark MacArthur, a ninth-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, signed with the team Wednesday.

MacArthur, a shortstop for The Master’s College, said he will report to rookie league and join Hamilton, Ontario, in the New York-Penn League.
