Henderson Makes Field a Canvas, Too

I thought I’d become immune to the irritation caused by old-timers who say things like, “Did you know Babe Ruth made less money in his career than . . . “ But Melvin Durslag’s column slagging Rickey Henderson’s base-stealing abilities because of his reluctance to steal home had to be a new low.
Mel goes on to take Rickey to task for “running his team out of an inning” too often. Yeah, and Durslag’s solution for this is to try to steal home once in a while!
Melvin’s opinion that Henderson can’t be considered an artist if he doesn’t steal home is like my saying Jim Murray can’t be called a great columnist until he writes a novel. “Why, in the old days, Grantland Rice would’ve knocked off three novels and a biography. . . . “
