TENNIS ROUNDUP : Lendl, Becker, Edberg Gain in London

Defending champion Ivan Lendl beat Simon Youl, 6-4, 6-2, Tuesday in the second round of the Stella Artois grass-court tennis tournament in London.

Last year’s Wimbledon champion, Boris Becker, beat American Paul Chamberlin, 6-4, 6-4. Wimbledon runner-up Stefan Edberg beat West German Markus Zoecke, 6-0, 6-3.

A winner of the French, U.S. and Australian opens, Lendl has practiced exclusively on grass courts since losing in the semifinals at Tokyo, April 9.

While most were playing on clay at the French Open the last two weeks, Lendl was winning a grass-court title in Beckhenham as he seeks his first Wimbledon title.

Yannick Noah, seeded No. 1, lost to Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-3, in the opening round of the Continental grass-court tournament at Rosmalen, the Netherlands.

Guillermo Perez-Roldan, seeded No. 1, had to go to a third-set tiebreaker to beat Cedrick Pioline of France, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6, in the opening round of the Florence International tennis tournament in Italy.
