Santa Monica : Hearing on Election Plan

Share

A public hearing will be held July 24 to discuss a ballot initiative that would divide Santa Monica into voting districts, the City Council decided Tuesday night. The measure would elect the seven City Council members by districts instead of at-large, limit them to two consecutive terms and provide for a primary election.

Council members questioned the level of community support for the Citizens United to Reform Elections initiative--the group abandoned a petition drive to place the measure on the ballot and only four members attended Tuesday’s meeting.

The public hearing and initiative would encourage more political participation by minorities, said members of the Mexican American Political Assn. Tuesday night. Breaking the voting down into seven districts would reduce the cost of running for the City Council seats, they said.
