Santa Monica High’s Felice Lipscomb suffered her first loss of the season in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday at the Golden West Invitational in Sacramento.

Lipscomb, a two-time state champion in the event, finished second at Golden West with a time of 14.38 seconds. Ayo Atterberry of New Rochelle, N.Y., won with a 14.21. The two are scheduled to race again Saturday at the Keebler Invitational in Chicago.

The USC-bound Lipscomb won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles at the state meet June 3 with personal best times of 13.58 and 41.69, respectively.

Lipscomb decided to run only the 100 hurdles in Sacramento since the longer hurdles race was 400 meters instead of 300.

The UCLA men’s varsity crew will make its fourth consecutive appearance under Coach Zenon Babraj in the National Collegiate Rowing Championships Saturday at Cincinnati.

The Bruins, whose best finish in the nationals during the 1980s was a fourth place in 1987, advanced to this year’s final after finishing second to Washington at the Pacific Coast Championships. UCLA was the three-time defending Pacific Coast champion going into this year’s regatta.

Others in the field at Cincinnati are defending national champion Harvard, Washington, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Syracuse.

UCLA junior catcher Paul Ellis has been selected the NCAA Division I player of the year by a vote of the American Baseball Coaches Assn. Ellis, who batted .360, drove in 83 runs and hit 29 homers, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.

UCLA Coach Gary Adams said Ellis “performed superbly against all competition throughout the season. He was very consistent, never experiencing any cold streaks.

“The fact that he accomplished so much while playing a demanding position is to his credit. He is certainly deserving of this prestigious award.”

Steve Aggers, head basketball coach at Wayne State in Nebraska for the past five years, was named an assistant at Pepperdine. He replaces Bob Williams, who recently became head coach at UC Davis.

Aggers and Pepperdine Coach Tom Asbury both served as assistants at the University of Wyoming during the 1978-79 season. A graduate of Chadron State College in Nebraska, Aggers played two seasons there and holds a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Nebraska Omaha.

He began coaching as an assistant at Chadron. From 1974-78 he was the head coach at Mid-Plains Community College in Nebraska and from 1979-85 he was head coach at the College of Great Falls in Montana.

Rob Hager, new football coach at West Los Angeles College, has appointed new assistants Marlin Briscoe and Tom Phillips. Phillips, who will be defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, was an assistant to Hager at West Hills College in Coalinga last year. Before that he was an assistant at Taft College.

Bruce Wallin, former Palisades High infielder, was named a co-most valuable player on the Colorado College baseball team. A junior shortstop at the NCAA Division III school, Wallin batted .486 and led his team with 35 hits, seven doubles, two triples and 26 runs.

Brentwood School volleyball players Brian Garrett, a junior, and Hamilton Von Watts, a senior, were named to the All-CIF Southern Section 4-A Division team. Notre Dame Academy senior pitcher Gloria Fernandez was selected on the All-Southern Section 1-A softball team.

The West Coast Conference will go from seven to six baseball teams in 1992, when Nevada Reno will play as an independent. Nevada Reno, which will play baseball as an associate WCC member next year, is a member of the Big Sky Conference, which does not sponsor baseball.

The WCC executive committee approved realigning the league at its spring meeting and cited increasing travel costs as the main reason.

In 1992, the conference’s six baseball teams will be Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, St. Mary’s, the University of San Diego, the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara.
