CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SAN FRANCISCO : Cable Car Stops Suddenly; 9 Injured

The sudden stop of a cable car as it cruised down California Street sent riders flying, injuring two crewmen and seven passengers. The car lurched to a stop as it hit a metal plate that had rattled loose between the tracks. About 15 passengers, mostly tourists, were aboard. The injured--including a conductor and a gripman--suffered cuts, bumps and bruises. None were badly hurt.
