Mickelson Is Open Low Amateur
Two-time NCAA champion Phil Mickelson of University of San Diego High finished as the low amateur at the U.S. Open at Medinah, Ill. with an even-par 288.
Sunday, Mickelson shot an even-par 72.
The only other amateur to make the cut, Dave Duval, was two under at the turn but faded to a 43 on the back nine and finished at 293.
Mickelson, an Arizona State sophomore, said success wouldn’t make him leave school and turn pro.
“I will finish my two years and hope to get some exemptions to get this atmosphere once in a while,” the left-hander said. “It’s nice to play against the best players in the world.”
If Mickelson was a professional, he would have collected $10,022 for his showing.
