From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

Police this morning had 14 suspects in custody in connection with an alleged drug ring that authorities say was responsible for the fatal shooting Thursday of an undercover Fullerton police officer.

The suspects, including one woman, were arrested in Los Angeles and Orange counties on a variety of charges after the shooting of veteran Officer Tommy De La Rosa at a house in Downey.

De La Rosa, 43, was ambushed by a group of men with whom he had arranged to sell cocaine in a reverse sting operation. De La Rosa managed to return fire and kill one of the suspects, whose name was not being released by police this morning. Three other men who fired at the officer were arrested a short time later.

The other 11 suspects were arrested during the night as alleged members of the same cocaine trafficking ring that Fullerton police said has been operating in Orange and Los Angeles counties. Fullerton police, assisted by an Orange County-based drug task force, first learned of the ring’s presence 2 1/2 weeks ago.
