Orange County Riders in Speedway Qualifying
The second round of qualifying for the world speedway motorcycle championship is scheduled today with four Americans competing in the Overseas Final at Coventry, England.
Shawn Moran of Huntington Beach, winner of the American Final at Long Beach three weeks ago, leads a group of Americans that also includes Ronnie Correy of Fullerton, Rick Miller of Reseda and Billy Hamill of Monrovia.
Correy was the only American rider to qualify for the world championship last year, finishing in a four-way tie for eighth place. The last American to win a world championship was Bruce Penhall in 1982.
The top nine riders at Coventry will advance to the InterContinental Final on Aug. 12 at Fjelsted, Denmark. The World Final is scheduled for Sept. 1 at Bradford, England.
