GOLF STATE AMATEUR : Duncan Wins Twice; Others From Area Out

PEBBLE BEACH — Rancho Santa Fe’s Pat Duncan, the four-time defending San Diego amateur champion, won first- and second-round matches as match play started Wednesday in the California Golf Assn.’s 79th State Amateur at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Three other San Diego-area golfers--San Diego’s Bob Imlay and Jack Spradlin Jr. and Rancho Santa Fe’s Todd Demsey--won first-round matches but lost in the second, and Fallbrook’s Craig Anderson lost in the first round.
Duncan defeated Alan Drobka of Newport Beach, 5 and 4, in the first round and Bryan Pemberton of Dublin, 6 and 5, in the second. He will play Gary Vanier of Oakland in the quarterfinals today.
Imlay defeated Mark Sear of San Jose, 1-up, then lost to Vanier, 6 and 5. Demsey defeated Craig Howard of Redding on the 19th hole in the first round, then lost to Ben Furth of San Francisco, 7 and 5. Spradlin defeated Mitch Voges of Simi Valley, 2 and 1, then lost to Sandy Galbraith of Fountain Valley, 1-up.
Anderson was beaten, 3 and 2, in the first round by Terrence Miskell of Salinas.
Two more rounds will be played today, with the 36-hole final Friday.
Defending champion Casey Boyns of Pacific Grove and medalist Mark Johnson of Oxnard were among the first-round casualties.
Boyns was beaten, 4 and 3, by reigning Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur champion Paul Stankowski. Johnson lost to Vanier, the 1982 state champion, 6 and 4.
Vanier was two under par for the day. Stankowski was the same, although he was playing Pebble Beach for the first time. He defeated David Berganio of Sylmar, 6 and 4, in the afternoon.
